International Record Review
(An IRR 'Outstanding' disc of the month)

"Undiscovered Islands is one of the best CD debuts I've encountered all year.

...Lynch has a gift for packing entire worlds into a few minutes. His ability to present so much wonder, colour and philosophy into so short a span...

Buy one for a friend and keep another for yourself!"

Gramophone

"...all this music possesses a personal and engaging quality expressed with a clear and lucid compositional skill...spare and often enigmatic, a distinctive flavour"

International Piano

"This is no ordinary release but a hypnotic programme of captivatingly inventive music...synthesised with a Ravelian sensitivity for sound and timbre.

...pieces that confirm Lynch as one of the modern masters of the musical miniature."

****Classical Music Magazine

"Such finely crafted and pleasing music..."

PAN
(Disc - 'editor's choice')

"(Lynch)...writes beautifully for the flute, demonstrating a deep understanding of its capabilities and demanding a wide range of expression...pieces that are a welcome addition to the repertoire, this is quite a find..."

A long standing fascination with the harpsichord ordres of Couperin has lead Graham to develop an ongoing series of piano pieces entitled White Books, and books 1 and 2 are recorded here for the first time by Mark Tanner. Like Couperin's pieces, these works depict the contrasting facets of life, evoking cultures and places that are both real and imaginary. The pace and personality varies significantly here, from the shadowed, sombre and evocative, to the charismatic and vivid. The other piano works on the disc are a set of four miniatures, Petenera, inspired by the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca.

Mark is also joined on this recording by flautist Gillian Poznansky, and together they play three popular tangos, as well as the poetic and frenzied Mediterranean. There is also the contemplative solo flute work Moon Cycle.

Despite the wide emotional range of these works, from meditative pieces like The Emperor's Field to the rhythmic ferocity of Hamamet or the bitter-sweet beauty of the tango Milonga Azure, there are common threads.

All the music is drawn from a harmonic language that contrasts a darker melancholy with dazzling colours, and melodies that are often modal in character and that reach into a European culture that includes non-classical influences such as flamenco, fado, and music of the Mediterranean..
